In 2017, the Food and Drug Administration approved Ozempic (semaglutide), a pre-filled injectable pen, to help people with Type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels and lower their risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in people with Type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

An injectable prescription drug called Ozempic®injections of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg are used for:

  • alongside diet and exercise to further develop glucose in grown-ups with type 2 diabetes.
  • to lessen the likelihood of major cardiovascular events like heart attacks, strokes, or death in adults with type 2 diabetes who already have heart disease.
  • Ozempic’s safety and effectiveness in children under the age of 18 are unknown.

How to take Ozempic?

Because it is administered as a once-weekly injection rather than as a daily, twice-day, or three-times-a-day regimen for some other medications, the Ozempic dosage may be preferable to that of other weight-loss medications.

Common side effects:

Ozempic was well tolerated. Gastrointestinal side effects, which typically lasted only a short time and ranged in severity from mild to moderate, were the most common.

Who can use Ozempic to lose weight?

Ozempic can only be used to improve blood sugar control and lower the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in people with both Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease at this time. It is only approved for this purpose in individuals with Type 2 diabetes.

Despite not being approved for weight loss, some healthcare professionals have begun using Ozempic off-label for weight loss following significant clinical trial results. However, not everyone should use Ozempic. Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 and individuals with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of cancer) should not take Ozempic.
